A House is Not a Home

We know. It’s a rather controversial statement. BUT – let us just explain why.

Yes, a house may not inherently be a home. BUT. A house can become a home through some tender love and care.

We’ve seen it all: hoarder houses where you cannot see the floor through all of the piled up trash, unstable roofing and foundations, and all kinds of housing disasters that nightmares are made of. While houses such as these have immense potential, they definitely require a helping hand in order to make the transformation from house to home.

Is all of this starting to make a little more sense? Good. Allow us to delve further into this bold proclamation of ours.

So. What makes a house a home?

We’re so glad you asked.

The Bare Necessities

Sure, we’ve all slept on a mattress on the floor. However, sleeping on a floor mattress with one dresser and your clothes strewn everywhere sorta hinders your house from being a home. Having the essentials like a bed frame, plumbing, and storage space are certainly steps in the right direction. However, implementing the next few sections of this post will allow for your house to truly arrive at its home-sweet-home potential.

Functionality

Keep bumping backsides in the kitchen? Does your space lack a sufficient amount of bathrooms for the whole family? Do you have a hallway or nook that you can’t seem to figure out what to do with? These issues all stem from the lack of utility of your house’s floor plan. Humans tend to be creatures of habit. Therefore, it’s very easy for us to fall into a set routine and/or acclimate to the way things are. However, if the “way things are” doesn’t lend itself to function, it may be time to re-think certain aspects of your house. By knocking down a wall or simply re-purposing certain spaces to give them actual utility, you can be well on your way to converting your house into a home that truly works for you!

(By the way, we offer design consultations if you’d like to make some upgrades or just want to maximize the space you have!)

Comfort

Sure, cool tones like charcoals and grays are in. But that doesn’t mean that your house should feel like a prison. There are ways to warm up your house to make it feel more cozy and inviting. It can be as simple as adding accent blankets or incorporating a papasan chair to add comfort and flair to your space!

Design

Make it your own!! Your home’s design doesn’t need to be straight out of a catalog. However, having a flow to the home by means of themes and patterns of flooring, paint, and trims, makes all the difference in the world. These aesthetic options comprise just a few simple decisions that make a huge difference in the feel of a home!

Those Personal Touches

Whether it’s your family photos in quirky frames, succulents that illuminate your personality, or floating shelves that you decorated yourself: personal touches are the final step in turning your house into a home.
